St. Louis Soft Tissue Injury Attorneys

Every year, almost 3 million people are injured in automobile accidents and many of these injuries are soft tissue injuries. These injuries, while not life threatening, can lead to chronic and lifelong disability, pain and suffering. If not properly diagnosed, these soft tissue injuries can have a profound and lifelong affect on individuals and their families.

A soft tissue injury is defined as any injury to the soft tissue in the body. These include injuries to the many muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves throughout the body. During an accident, the body is often twisted and pulled in various directions, causing injuries to the delicate soft tissue throughout the body. The most common soft tissue injury is to the soft tissue surrounding the neck. This injury is more commonly known as whiplash.

Types of Soft Tissue Injuries

Some of the most common soft tissue injuries include:

  • Strains: This is when you stretch a muscle or tendon until it partially or fully tears. Serious soft tissue tears may require surgery, therapy and rest. The most common areas for strains are the tendons and muscles in the foot and leg.
  • Sprains: This is an injury to the ligaments that support the joints. The most common areas for sprains are the ankles, knees and wrists. While minor sprains may only require icing, rest and elevation, serious sprains may require surgery to repair the torn ligaments.
  • Contusions: This is when a muscle, tendon or ligament is bruised. Blood pools around the injury and the skin may become discolored when there is a contusion. When the contusion is serious there may be the danger of permanent damage to the soft tissue.
  • Bursitis: A “bursa” is a fluid filled sac that helps tendons to slide over the bone. When the bursa sac is swollen or irritated it is called bursitis. The most common locations for bursitis are in the shoulder, hip, elbow, ankle or knee.
  • Tendonitis: This is when a tendon is repeatedly aggravated by small stresses for a long time. Athletes are subject to painful tendonitis injuries in their arms, shoulders, legs and feet. Like strains and sprains, a severe tendonitis may require surgery to fully heal.
