St. Louis Intersection Accidents at Grand Ave. and I-70
Mark Twain Expressway, otherwise known as I-70, is one of the busiest interstates in St. Louis County, providing a popular route between downtown St. Louis and St. Louis International Airport. In spite of it providing a much-needed express lane for numerous drivers in the County, it also can be one of the most treacherous interstates, especially at on and off-ramps. These crossroads can feature a wide variety of dangerous designs that inexperienced drivers can become confused by, often leading to collisions. One such intersection, located at Grand Ave. and I-70 in College Hill, can be especially perilous.
The intersection of Grand and the I-70 is located on the north side of St. Louis, just a mile from the Mississippi River. While the interstate itself has recently been repaved, as well as its northbound exit and entrance, Grand Ave. is in need of serious repairs and repainting to properly distinguish between lanes. Despite local traffic lights at the on and off-ramps, dangerous intersection accidents can easily occur due to the lack of guidance when exiting or entering the interstate. There are also no clear markings for where a driver should stop, as well as where pedestrians can safely cross the street, putting residents at further risk of injuries.
As a whole, St. Louis saw more than 15,000 auto accidents in a single recent year, including over 4,100 injury-causing collisions and 57 fatal accidents, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP). In addition, when the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) reviewed St. Louis’s accident rates over a three-year period, the department estimated that roughly 171 vehicle collisions in St. Louis were fatal, accounting for about 6% of all fatal accidents in Missouri. The majority of these accidents were the result of negligent drivers who ignored or disobeyed the basic rules of the rule.
In fact, according to MoDOT, the leading causing of fatal collisions in St. Louis include:
- Unsignalized intersections
- Unlicensed drivers
- Being run off the road
- Lack of seat belt use
- Speeding and aggressive driving
- Distracted driving
- Pedestrian accidents
- Commercial vehicle collisions
- Younger and older drivers
- Head-on collisions
- Motorcycle accidents
