St. Louis Intersection Accidents at Kingshighway Boulevard and I-64
Both North and South Kinghighsway Boulevard and I-64 are important highways in St. Louis. I-64 takes drivers from the eastern to the western half of the city, whereas Kingshighway Blvd. handles much of the northern and southern traffic that is not on the interstate. Where they cross, the St. Louis University is not far from the intersection. With over 13,000 students, the university provides a great deal of traffic for the surrounding area, this intersection included.
Considering the importance of this intersection to traffic throughout St. Louis, you would assume it was designed with safety in mind. That is not exactly the case.
In a typical intersection, you expect the two roads to intersect at four points. Here, you might expect an on-ramp and off-ramp for the westbound traffic on I-64, and an on-ramp and off-ramp for the eastern traffic. At Kingshighway Blvd. and I-64, however, there are eight points of entry: two on-ramps and two off-ramps for eastern and western traffic. On top of that, located in the middle of these entryways and exits are two lanes between the two sides of Kingshighway Blvd that allow through traffic. This means that drivers must be able to focus on cars entering and exiting at multiple points on their right, as well as other cars suddenly crossing lanes on their left.
If drivers are not vigilant throughout that entire stretch of road, then they could very easily cause a serious accident. Intersection accidents grow increasingly common as the population of St. Louis expands and the traffic on the roads increases. In fact, in a recent tragedy, a young child was killed at this intersection when two cars attempted to merge into the same lane. This collision is just one of many that happen in St. Louis. According to the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), in the most recent year for which statistics are available, St. Louis hosted almost 6% of all accidents in Missouri, with over 300 collisions occurring in just one year.
Distracted driving, which is a serious issue at complicated intersections such as Kingshighway Blvd. and I-64, is a leading cause of these tragic collisions in the city.
