Clayton Intersection Accidents at Forest Park Pkwy and I-170
As the administrative center of St. Louis County, the city of Clayton sees a lot of visitors. Located less than eight miles west of St. Louis, Clayton is situated perfectly beside Forest Park, and home to the St. Louis Zoo, the iconic Jewel Box, and St. Louis Art Museum. It offers a great escape from the hustle and bustle of downtown St. Louis while also providing an important role as the county seat where numerous government decisions are made.
However, the large amount of traffic this area sees, coupled with complex road designs, can create a dangerous combination. At many intersections throughout the city, drivers can become involved in catastrophic accidents that leave them dealing with costly injuries. One factor for these accidents is the I-170, a major interstate along the western half of Clayton that intersects with multiple major roads. Forest Park Parkway is one such road that frequently bears witness to dangerous collisions, which often shut down the interstate.
Forest Park Pkwy and the I-170 create a rather odd-looking T-intersection. The eastern end of Forest Park is designed to naturally merge into the I-170, whether drivers are traveling north or southbound. However, inexperienced drivers may not realize they are getting on the freeway, which can cause them to make dangerous lane changes to avoid it.
Clayton as a whole saw an estimated 561 accidents throughout the city, with 113 involving serious injuries and, luckily, only one fatality, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. In a three-year analysis of Clayton car accidents, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) identified the following major contributors to collisions:
- Signalized intersection accidents
- Older drivers
- Pedestrians accidents
- Head-on collisions
- Distracted driving
- Being run off the road
- Unsignalized intersection collisions
- Alcohol or drug use
- Motorcycle accidents
- Unlicensed drivers
- Bicycle accident
Oftentimes, these accidents are extremely traumatic and result in disabilities for the victim that last a lifetime.
