The Dangers of Summer Driving

Missouri Auto AccidentsIt is a common misconception that the only dangerous time to drive is during the winter months when Missouri is covered in snow and ice. There are many dangers present during the summer months as well. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reports August and September are the most dangerous months of the year with regard to fatal car accidents.

There are a number of reasons why the risk of a serious car accident increases in the summer, including:

  • Vacation driving: The highways are often more congested during the summer because of drivers on vacation. Some drivers are simply unfamiliar with local roadways while others are fatigued and distracted.
  • Teenage drivers: School is out and teenagers have more time to drive. Their lack of experience makes them more dangerous. Some lack the skills needed to avoid a collision.
  • Tire blowouts: The heat can contribute to tire failure. The hot weather can cause the air in your tires to expand, which can lead to a blowout if the tires are worn or defective.
  • Additional motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians: Summer is the time of year when pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists take to the roadway. Keep an eye out for smaller vehicles and people on foot. Always look twice before changing lanes, turning, or entering an intersection.
  • Construction: There are many road construction crews working during the summer. Slow down near construction sites and look out for slow moving vehicles, narrow lanes, and construction workers.
  • Summer heat: Unless you have something to drink in your vehicle, the summer heat can dehydrate you quickly. It is hard to focus on the roadway when you are hot and thirsty.

Summertime is when the most fatal accidents happen. Drive safely and obey the speed limit. Limit your distractions and stay focused on the roadway.
