SSD Application And Deadlines

In most instances, an individual can file a Social Security Disability (SSD) claim online at www.ssa.gov/pgm/disability.htm. This option is for people who have a solid understanding of all the elements that make up their application.

Since this does not provide the chance to ask questions during the process, which can be complex depending on the circumstances, a more personalized approach may be a better option for many applicants. In that case, contact your local Social Security office directly and tell them you would like to start an application. The agency can also guide you in determining the type of application to file (SSD or SSI).

Once the local office is contacted an interview will be scheduled, which may be conducted over the phone or in person at the Social Security office. If the interview is conducted over the phone, all paperwork concerning your application will be mailed to the your home.

Applying is only the initial step in the process. After that, your case will be reviewed by the Social Security Administration (SSA), and then either approved or rejected. In the instance of rejection, filing an appeal is the next step.

The Appeal Process

We'll break the appeal process into steps.

In the same way you began your claim, there are two ways to file an appeal: 1) fill out the appeal online, which is the preferred method of the SSA, or 2) contact your local SSA office and let them know you want to start an appeal on your existing claim, at which point they will send you the necessary paperwork.

On the forms, you will be asked to provide information about doctors that have treated you, recent medical treatment, and changes in your disabling condition, as well as any additional conditions you have to report. Keep copies of any forms (paper and digital) for your records. If you file a paper copy, follow up with the office a couple weeks later.

Finally, one of the most key things to remember when filling out a disability appeal is to complete it within the 60-day deadline. If you miss your deadline, you may be obligated to submit an entirely new application, depending on what the SSA deems appropriate regarding your circumstances.
