The Danger of St. Louis Jackknife Accidents

St. Louis Car AccidentsA jackknife accident happens when a tractor-trailer combination skids and the trailer swings out to one side of the tractor. When the trailer forms an angle that looks like the angle of a blade of a jackknife, it can result in a rollover, a runaway trailer, or a complete loss of control. These types of tractor trailer accidents often happen when the wheels of a rig lock up during wet conditions, but it can also happen as a result of driver error. Truck drivers who go over the speed limit, make abrupt turns, or abrupt lane changes, can cause devastating jackknife accidents.

During an emergency situation, truck drivers are advised to lock the steering axle brakes, thereby allowing the rig to stop while moving straight ahead. Locking the trailer axles can result in a loss of directional control, and locking the drive axles can result in a jackknife. The actions the driver takes will determine whether or not the trailer will continue out of control. If the driver causes a jackknife accident by locking the drive axels, they will likely be responsible for any crash they cause.

There are many reasons to avoid jackknifing incidents. When a trailer swings out of control, it can crush smaller vehicles that are nearby. In some cases, a trailer can become detached and barrel down the roadway into oncoming traffic. In other situations, the swinging trailer can crush or tear the tops off of passenger vehicles that were next to the truck at the time of the crash.

If you have been involved in a jackknife accident, it’s important for you to remain at the scene and to speak with the police. You should request a copy of the police report and a copy of the tractor event data recorder.
